Day Of Fasting Thoughts

As I sit here typing, the day of fasting for Terri Schaivo has begun. My wife and 11 month old son are safely in bed. My world is great, yet I am still deeply distressed about Terri's situation. Think about it in these terms, what if you knew you had one week to live, which is Terri's situation. Now, what if you didn't? Well, Terri doesn't know her feeding tube is going to be removed in one week. All she knows is that she loves it when her parents are at her bedside. You can see it in her face when they are together. Terri though has something many of us don't, the ability to enjoy the simple things in life. She is captivated by a helium balloon hovering overhead or is soothed by the loving touch of her mother. We all get so busy, that we don't stop long enough to take in the "mundane". It is these things that provided hours of intrigue for us when we were young. Now, Terri can't enjoy many things that most of us can. She can't go outside for a walk around God's creation. She can't go for boat rides on the waterways of FL. But, she can love. She can love her parents because she knows they love her because they are at her bedside as much as possible. She is still able to provide happiness to her parents.
To take her feeding tube would be such an unspeakable crime. What's more, is that if someone starved an animal to death in FL, they would in fact be put in jail. Where is the justice? Has Judge Greer's judgment been so clouded as to actually think Terri's life is somehow not as valuable as it once was or as another person? It is not up to us to make value judgments about another's life because every life is precious. Further, we certainly can't make decisions as to when one's life is to end. One day our life will be required of us, but not until the appointed time. This time can only come from the author of life, Jesus Christ.
