Prayer Thoughts For Terri
by Bryan Massingale

As the clock struck 1:00 today I was filled with anticipation. My anticipation was born out of who God is and what He can do.

For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. - Colossians 1:16-17 (NIV)

That is so comforting. All things hold together because God is in control. So, from this passage we see He is not only our Creator, but out Sustainer. I have been praying that He would sustain Terri and her family during this process. Something that was interesting during my prayer at 1:00 today was I kept being led back to Psalms. I love that book because it so clearly appeals to things we struggle with daily. At any rate, I ran across Psalms 70 and it seemed like a prayer written for this purpose today. It says:

Hasten, O God, to save me;
O LORD , come quickly to help me.
May those who seek my life be put to shame and confusion;
may all who desire my ruin be turned back in disgrace.
May those who say to me, "Aha! Aha!" turn back because of their shame.
But may all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you;
may those who love your salvation always say, "Let God be exalted!"
Yet I am poor and needy;
come quickly to me, O God.
You are my help and my deliverer;
O LORD , do not delay.

It has been my prayer that God be Terri's deliverer from this situation. I don't pretend to know what form that will take, but in my finitude I would choose her to remain here with us a while longer. Of course God's will is good and perfect and that is what will be done. I pray that He comes to her aid without delay and in the process He will be glorified!

I also ran across Psalms 10 and couldn't stop thinking of Terri's husband Michael.

...In his arrogance the wicked man hunts down the weak,
who are caught in the schemes he devises.
He boasts of the cravings of his heart;
he blesses the greedy and reviles the LORD .
In his pride the wicked does not seek him;
in all his thoughts there is no room for God...

I pray that God will open Michael's eyes and heart to the damage that is being done to Terri and the fervent support by many throughout the world.

Terri is a gift from the Lord, and her story has been an inspiration to many as well as a hopeful catalyst to change how people with disabilities are treated in this country. People shouldn't be allowed to starve to death. We all have intrinsic value that we can neither quantify nor place our own hierarchy of importance on.

The assembly of the saints today for this purpose I believe will reap benefits for Terri. Let's all continue to pray for her. God Bless each one of you.
