Rice Unsatisfied By Progress In Lebanon

Syria began the long awaited pullback from the Lebanese territory last night. A total of 6,000 soldiers pulled back from the region in a convoy and were welcomed by their people with chants, flowers and cakes once they crossed the border. About a hundred vehicles (60 according to the BBC) were also moved along with the troops, including trucks, jeeps and buses. The Syrian army first entered Lebanon during the civil war in 1976, on which occasion one of the coalitions involved asked Damascus for military support.
U.S. Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice commented about the partial withdrawal, "It's not a bad thing that Syrian forces are moving - clearly not a bad thing - but it is also not compliance with 1559 [U.N. resolution]," adding that, "If there's an ultimatum, it's 1559. It's get out."
Mrs. Rice also expressed the hope that the American envoy, Terje Roed-Larsen could find a clearer explanation about the extent of the pullback in his forthcoming meeting with the Syrian President Bashar al-Asad in Damascus next Saturday.
An article in the New York Times by Steven Erlanger talks about Israeli support to the pullback of the Syrian troops from Lebanon, claiming the Hezbollah Resistance fighters to be the first concern for Jerusalem. The strong popular following this organization has in Lebanon is well-known and the Israeli Secret Services suspect that the kamikazes in the West Bank are buying weapons in Teheran and Damascus.
