The 112th Carnival of the Vanities
9 November 2004
Welcome, friends, and welcome, strangers. The theme for this week's carnival is "Things Having Nothing To Do With Partisan Politics". Pull up a chair, grab a cold one out of the fridge, and enjoy. (Who decides whether a post is partisan or not? I do! Bwa ha ha! Try and stop me!) Posts are in the order that I, drunk with power, typed them in. Entries Which Followed The Theme And Are Thus Rewarded With Top Billing Coyote Blog takes a fascinating look at the relative success of former colonies of the various world powers. Legenda says "For a long time, there has been an article in circulation, by Lee Harris, entitled "Al Qaeda's Fantasy Ideology". The following excerpt represents the argument that I disagree with..." Incite has some new ideas for X-Prize-type incentives for non-governmental stimulation of technological innovation and creativity. Mr. Minority says " The Supreme Court has deigned to hear the case of Castle Rock, CO, vs. Gonzales in which one Jessica Gonzales has sued the town of Castle Rock for failing to enforce a protective order against her estranged husband..." DaGoddess says "Gentlemen, please take note: A good haircut really does make a difference in how the world perceives you." La Shawn Barber is celebrating her first blogiversary. Congratulations La Shawn! The People's Republic of Seabrook says "Having spent part of 1994 working for a Mercy Corps International in Kosovo, Serbia, and Croatia, I’ve maintainted more than a passing interest in affairs in the Balkans." Dodgeblogium says "Last night fellow blogger Andrew Ian Dodge, yours truly, and my girlfriend did the traditional British Nov 5 thing and marked Guy Fawkes’ night." Quibbles-n-Bits knows about the secret shame lurking at the bottom of your music collection. Confess! Ashish's Niti asks "Is taxation a legal theft?Yazad Jal at AnarCapLib compares Customs duty collection by Govt. to highway robbery!" Tim Worstall has valuable advice on power napping, and proper toilet etiquette for heads of state. Admiral Quixote's Roundtable hosts a discussion between a pro-life Protestant and a pro-choice Catholic. An interesting, and civil, dialog. The Big Picture has some suggestions for governments that want to get religion out of the public square. Blog d'Elisson makes up for the suspiciously French name with a review of a recent film that puts the "F" back in Freedom. The Raving Atheists suggests the nation's gays move to North Dakota and take over the marriage machinery of that state - and hold heterosexual marriages to their own professed standards. Peaktalk has some input on the terror war for our European friends. Interested Participant asks "what's the deal with phony trackbacks?" Entries Which Callously Disregarded The Theme And Are Thus Condemned To Perdition's Flames, Or At Least Put At The Bottom Of The Post The Gleeful Extremist says " Even after Pennsylvania's other senator, Catholic and self-described pro-life senator Rick Santorum, endorsed pro-abortion Arlen Specter in the primary instead of a pro-life challenger..." Wicked Thoughts has another version of the letter that a leftist British newspaper sent out to American voters. Tex The Pontificator says "I am not a sports fan, and sports metaphors do not readily come to me. But in reading the following passage from Paul Johnson's column in the Hispanic-American Center for Economic Research, one came to mind. Speaking of Bush, Mr. Johnson says..." Attaboy wants disappointed Democrats to keep some perspective, and keep breathing. Les Jones says "Hey, excitable liberals! Thinking of moving to Canada to escape the concentration camps of Bushaliburton's Christian Reich?" John Ray of Dissecting Leftism, PC Watch, Greenie Watch, Gun Watch, Education Watch, Socialized Medicine, and Leftists as Elitists says "for the love of God, won't somebody get me a new hobby?" We The Free has some thoughts on our recent near-miss Manuchurian candidate. D-42 points out that all the good advice to the Democrats about 2008 isn't going to stop Hillary from bulldozing her way to the nomination. The Key Monk doesn't want Bush's second term to be haunted by Specter. (I apologize for that joke.) Espresso Sarcasm bravely gives equal time to poking fun at GW. Eric Berlin wants New York to put its money where its mouth is. Classical Values has an omnibus post about the election, with special attention to the tale of Kerry's obsessive courtship of McCain. QandO performs a thorough fisking of Paul Krugman's latest. A Physicist's Perspective shines some light on the whole "moral issue" voters thing. Watcher of Weasels says there is so a mandate. And that's a wrap, folks. Thanks for dropping by. Please remember to tip your servers, and have a pleasant evening. Robert @ 19:23 | | | . | E-Mail This Post |

In 2003 I designed a family educational game called Age of Heroes. It is a lot of fun, and is available as a printable download from my game web site. There's no charge for the game - it is a completely free gift for you. Check it out and see if it's something you'd enjoy! Kids love the game, adults enjoy it too, and gamers find it fun and challenging. There are lots of sample graphics at the Legend Games web site; check it out! ATTENTION WRITERS & ARTISTS: Have you written or created an original work? Legend Games is branching out into the publishing field, and we can work together to turn your book into an online resource. We're small - which means you get high royalties because our expenses are low. Take that research report, story, novel, play, curriculum, syllabus, etc. that's gathering dust on your hard drive and make us both some money. Send submissions to rhayes2 at uccs dot edu. RSS Feed The feed doesn't seem to work. I don't know why. Technologically, I am the equivalent of a village in the deep desert whose mechanical well pump has broken. Please help us, kind strangers!
