Pictures For Stephanie
2 December 2004
Sometimes I forget how much wealth (in terms of human happiness, which in my view is the ultimate arbiter of wealth) is created passively by the Internet. FreedomToddler(TM) has developed a method of amusing herself. Periodically she comes down the stairs to my basement office and sunnily asks "look at pictures?" OK. She climbs on my lap, or not, as the fancy suits her. She makes requests of the universe at large in the universal imperative of the small child. "Mars!" I obediently select the bookmarked image of Mars from my increasingly exhaustive collection of her selection. A moment's contemplation. "Orange Snake!" Very well; here you go. "Moon!" And so it goes. Sometimes she only asks for a few samples. Occasionally there is a marathon, punctuated by novel requests that result in a quick search on Google images, and the addition of a new favorite. "Waterfall" was recently added to the list. To her, this is nothing remarkable. Of course there is a magic box that, with Daddy's help, shows me pictures of whatever it is I want to see. Duh. To me, it is...well, it's not a miracle, but it's something. Her life is significantly enriched. Mine is enriched by her in pretty much every waking moment spent in her company. (It's funny how that is true of kids and spouses in general. And luckily for me, in the specific.) I believe that the way to respond to something positive in the world is to try and magnify it, and the way to respond to something negative in the world is to try and diminish it. Call me crazy; there it is. "Pictures For Stephanie" is a semi-open-submission list of "G"-rated picture links. Anyone who wishes is invited to download the list and use it freely with no restriction. I gratefully accept all submissions at rhayes2@uccs.edu. Please send the link, rather than the picture file. If you own a linked picture and don't want people sucking up your bandwidth, please drop me a note (rhayes2@uccs.edu) and I will drop you from the list directly. This post will be permanently maintained here. If you think this list is a nice idea, consider linking to it. Links are free. Submissions will be reviewed daily or so; pretty much any publicly accessed image is acceptable as long as it is "G" rated and has a clearly identifiable subject or subject(s). Please use the following format for submissions: Picture Subject Rabbits In A Field I'll continue to make this a publicly available list even if it's only growth is through my own additions; it would be really cool if it became insanely popular, however. You can always download the list by clicking right here. This should load right into your browser as a straightforward HTML file; just use your browser's search feature to look for whatever keyword your little tyrant desires to see. Supporting Let's Try Freedom If you'd like to make a small gift to me to keep this blog going, then just hit this button and give whatever you feel like giving. All gifts are appreciated! In 2003 I designed a family educational game called Age of Heroes. It is a lot of fun, and is available as a printable download from my game web site. There's no charge for the game - it is a completely free gift for you. Check it out and see if it's something you'd enjoy! Kids love the game, adults enjoy it too, and gamers find it fun and challenging. There are lots of sample graphics at the Legend Games web site; check it out! ATTENTION WRITERS & ARTISTS: Have you written or created an original work? Legend Games is branching out into the publishing field, and we can work together to turn your book into an online resource. We're small - which means you get high royalties because our expenses are low. Take that research report, story, novel, play, curriculum, syllabus, etc. that's gathering dust on your hard drive and make us both some money. Send submissions to rhayes2 at uccs dot edu. RSS Feed The feed doesn't seem to work. I don't know why. Technologically, I am the equivalent of a village in the deep desert whose mechanical well pump has broken. Please help us, kind strangers!
